Kanekichi Yanagihara and roots research

Tetsuo Oda    posted on 2025/4/29

Dear Kamuro Party Members, I have enjoyed browsing the Kamuro Party website for the past few years. I have been particularly impressed by the history of the activities of our predecessors as I read the Kamuro newsletter.

By the way, I saw "I want to know the roots of Yanagihara Kanekichi". I have also collected some materials related to "Yanagihara Kanekichi" while researching my ancestors, so I am sending them to you. I hope you will find them useful. I hope that it will be of some help to Gregory Yanagihara. It seems that he was a close friend of Nishimura Shikazo.

(1) The name of the donor of the main hall of Hakuseiji Temple is “Yanagihara Kanekichi”. Reference 1

(2) Yanagihara Kanekichi's wife is "Kimura Tome", but according to my research, there are two "Yanagihara Tome" in Hilo and Honolulu, Hawaii, and both husbands are from Okikamuro. Reference 2    The "Yanagihara Tome" in Honolulu is Yanagihara Tamezo's wife. The birth and death years of the two people seem to be mixed up.

(3) According to my research, Yanagihara Kanekichi’s father was Yanagihara Chomatsu and his mother was Matsu (Kimura Shigekichi’s older sister).

(4) Yanagihara Chomatsu’s fourth daughter (Hana) was the wife of Nishimura Manji. Nishimura Manji was also the uncle of Nishimura Kiyoshi, who was famous for creating genealogies (Manji was the eldest brother of Kiyoshi’s father, Kumaji).

(5) It seems that Kanekichi and Tome Yanagiwara had two sons and three daughters. Reference 3 (2)   Gregory's parents are unknown.

(6) There is a newspaper article like this: Reference 3

① Yanagihara Kanekichi was the hardworking owner of Yanagihara Shoten, which was a thriving business. He died in January 1958 (aged 75). (1) (2) (6)    *Kanekichi's name can be read as "Kanekichi" or "Kenkichi", but based on the information about the camp, I think it is "Kanekichi".

② The eldest son was Kaneaki (the newspaper said "Kenmei" but I think it was a typo) and married Maeda Toshiko. At the wedding, Nishimura Shikazo gave a speech of thanks on behalf of the Yanagihara family. (3) The eldest son was Stanley Kanekichi. (4)

③ The second son, Hiroyuki, was a brilliant graduate of Yamaguchi Commercial High School and a lieutenant in the army. He was the assistant manager of Foodland Market. His daughter, Airin Tomie, married Fujima Ajun. (1) (5)

④ A photo of SUISAN is published, and Kanekichi Yanagihara was an auditor of SUISAN (1915). (7)

● A brief history of "Shikazo Nishimura" based on my research

1. The maternal great-grandfather of my wife's cousin (who lives in California) is Shikazo Nishimura. In fact, I started researching about 5 years ago at her request. I started with only the information that he was from Yamaguchi Prefecture and that he was a fisherman involved in SUISAN.

2. After consulting the Japan Hawaii Emigrants Museum, I found out that he was from Okikamuro in the Hawaii Japanese Development Guide, and I was able to get various information from the newsletter Kamuro, a visit to Hakuseiji Temple in Okikamuro, and Japanese newspapers in Hawaii, which I am currently compiling.

3. There were two "Shikazo Nishimura"s from Homura in Okikamuro, so I was confused. The wife of Shikazo who I am researching is Yagi Towa, and the wife of the other Shikazo is Ishizaki Toyo. Both are graves in Hilo.

4. Nishimura Shikazo was originally (adopted) "Yagi Shikazo" when he immigrated to Hawaii, but later changed his surname back to Nishimura. Shikazo served as president of SUISAN, especially as vice president, for a long time. He is the west champion of "Hawaii Hilo's Child number Ranking" in the Kamuro reprint volume 2 (p.128). (Incorrect: Nishimura Shikazo, third son and seventh daughter → Correct: Nishimura Shikazo, second son and eighth daughter)

5. Nishimura Shikazo's eldest daughter Tomoyo is the wife of Matsuno Kamezo (manager and president of SUISAN). His descendants currently run SUISAN.

6. Nishimura Shikazo's eldest son Hideichi (written as Hideichi, featured in "Pirates who traveled to Hawaii") is a dentist, and later served as president of the Hawaii Prefecture Dentists Association.
