Who is Kanzaemon-I Ishizaki? (Vol. 1)

Masato Katsuyama received Dec. 12, 2019

There are several distinct descriptions about Kanzaemon-I Ishizaki who settled in and re-reclaimed Okikamuro Island in 1606 (Keicho 11th). It is difficult to conclude which is correct.

According to Ishizaki-Keifu (the family tree of Okikamuro Ishizaki Head Family), it is described as follows: “Ishizaki Family is the legitimate descendant of a Mr. Nakamura who was a lord of Iwasaki Castle in Tohoku area and a 13th generation descendant of Akiie Kitabatake.” “A Mr. Nakamura served Iyo-Kohno Family, had a castle in Kazahaya County, possessed Gogo-shima Island etc., and changed his name to Zenbei Ishizaki.” “His castle fell when Iyo-Kohno Family went to ruin.” “He moved to Kodomari, Suoh Big Island.” “Zenbei changed his name to Kanzaemon. He is the originator of Okikamuro Ishizaki Family.” “He changed his family name Nakamura to Ishizaki, not Iwasaki (the name of ancestors’ castle), because he hesitated to use it under his lord. He removed “mountain” from “iwa (rock)” in Chinese character and used “ishi (stone)”. “It is also recorded in an old document that he used the family name Tomozawa.” “Tradition has it that an old family tree was preserved in his temple in Kazahaya County. His relatives still live in Gogo-shima etc. and are using the same family name.” These descriptions suggest that “Zenbei Ishizaki” was Kanzaemon-no-joh-I-Akimune, and he moved to Kodomari, a seaside town west of Yuu, and then settled in and re-reclaimed Okikamuro Island on January 20, 1606. However, the name “Akimune” is not found in other documents. It seems to be derived from Akiie Kitabatake, because Okikamuro Ishizaki people claimed themselves descendants of him.

According to the family tree of Yuu Ishizaki Family, Terumune Ishizaki (Shiro-Nyuhdoh Dohkan) had two sons; the elder son Shirozaemon-no-joh-Terutame served Kohno Family and succeeded Terumune, and the younger son Jirozaemon-no-joh-Teruyuki served Noshima-Murakami Family and then lived in Yashiro Island. The first son of Teruyuki became the originator of Yuu Ishizaki Family. The second son of Teruyuki was “Kanzaemon Ishizaki”, and was described that “he moved to Agenosho and then reclaimed and settled in Kamuro”.

In Ishizaki-Kafu, the family tree of Gogo-shima Ishizaki Head Familiy, following description is the same as that of the family tree of Yuu Ishizaki Family; the first son and second son of Shirosaburo-Terumune Ishizaki were Terutame and Teruyuki, respectively. Terutame was the originator of Gogo-shima Ishizaki Head Familiy, and his descendants became village chiefs of Gogo-shima. It was just recorded that Teruyuki established a branch family in Yuu and his descendants “moved to Okikamuro Island in Suoh”.

In Tomozawa Kakeizu Ryakuden, the family tree of Mitajiri Tomozawa Family, the description that the first son and second son of Shirosaburo-Terumune Ishizaki were Terutame and Teruyuki, respectively, is the same as that of the above two documents. About Shirozaemon-no-joh-Terutame, it was described that he died in the fall of Iyo-Kohno Family and there was little information about his descendants. About Jirozaemon-no-joh-Teruyuki, it was described as follows: “He served Takeyoshi (of Noshima-Murakami Family).” “He moved to Yashiro Island and changed his name to Kanzaemon Ishizaki.” “He moved to Kamuro with his son Shotaro Ishizaki and his vassals.” That means Teruyuki is Kanzaemon-I.

It is difficult to conclude which description is correct, because there seems to be deliberate alterations in family trees.
