I visited Yaesu on the east side of Tokyo Station for the first time in eight years. A high school reunion that has been cut off in Corona will be held at Edglan Building in Kyobashi this fall. He wanted to hold the preliminary meeting at the same place, 10 minutes from the Yaesu exit. This area is where I spent my first 10 years as a member of society. This Yaesu, which was the stage of youth, and the adjacent Kyobashi district are the most memorable places in my life.
At the time of joining the company, when I passed through Daimaru and went out to the Yaesu South Exit, there was the Sumitomo Life Building in front of me. There was a coffee shop on the right side, and as soon as I entered the alley in between, my company with three floors was on the right side. It was later subject to land readjustment, and the Sumitomo Trust and Banking building was built on the site. The Shinko Securities building was soon built on the south side of the vast vacant lot at the time of joining the company, and it still remains. Facing the wide street which goes to the Sukiyabashi intersection, next to it was Kajima Construction building whose behind is Yaesu Book Center, and Honda's building.
Now, this area has been greatly transformed by redevelopment. When you exit the familiar Yaesu South Exit, the 45-story, 240-meter Tokyo Midtown Yaesu towers high in the sky, following the new building of Yanmar. It is a gallant figure just before the completion of a huge redevelopment project called "Yaesu 2-chome 1 district" that swallowed not only the alleys on both sides of the life insurance company building but also the Joto Elementary School that should have been behind it.
The redevelopment of the Yaesu area is a grand project to radically reconstruct the east side of Tokyo Station. From the north, the Tokiwabashi Tower and 63-story 390m torch tower in the Tokiwabashi area, the 38-story 212m building in the Yaesu 1-chome North area, and the 54-story Yaesu 1-6 area. A 250m building and a 43-story, 226m building in the "Yaesu 2-chome Naka District" are located to the south of Tokyo Midtown Yaesu.
In fact, the Edglan Building that I visited the other day was also a huge building that was born from redevelopment. When I was informed of the meeting, I didn't remember the name of such a building, but when I looked at the map, it was around Meidi-ya. When I actually visited, the surrounding area including the alley was redeveloped together while making the best use of that building, which is a tangible cultural property. The street leading to the subway entrance on the south side of Meidi-ya was reborn as a pedestrian walkway inside the building.
In my old concept, redevelopment means building new roads or widening roads, and I had no idea that they would be crushed. Urban redevelopment may not be successful without reorganization from the basic idea.
Even so, Japan has not even grasped the opportunity to escape from the long stagnation period. I want Japan to redevelop the economic power that has fallen to the second and a half of the world with a new concept and a new method based on it. And I hope that Yaesu, the hometown of my youth, will be reborn as an attractive city by this redevelopment.
